Art project: Fraternité / Brüderlichkeit

Posted on by

As part of the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018, the VGKN, in collaboration with the CERD, the French art association Quinz’art (Strasbourg, organization) and the German artists’ group Plakat Wand Kunst (associated artists), had implemented a joint project on the theme of “Fraternité/Brüderlichkeit” (engl.: Fraternity), consisting of an art project and an accompanying educational project.

On the one hand, the theme refers to the – always endangered – fraternity and solidarity of the prisoners in the concentration camps; on the other hand, it derives from the text of today’s European anthem and refers to the roots of the process of European unification from the experience of war and disenfranchisement.

The art project culminated in a parallel exhibition at the CERD (Natzweiler Memorial, France) and the “Haus der Wirtschaft” in Stuttgart, after which the artworks were moved to the subcamp memorial sites.

The pedagogical accompanying project included the development of a learning module on the topic of “Europeanity”, the organization of visits by artists and young people to the memorial sites, and the pedagogical accompaniment of joint workshops by the artists with young people. From this accompanying project, numerous wonderful works of art on the topic were created by the students.
